That’s better than a bike ride in the brisk fall air enjoying the splendor of early fall? Bicycling not only can take you to some of the most beautiful places, it is a great exercise for fitness and rehabilitation. Whether the bike is stationary or not, pedaling works all the muscles of the leg in a natural with avoid high impact on joints. Hips, knees, ankles and feet all get a workout. Early in rehab after injury or surgery stationary bikes have a special role because you can stop and get off if pain starts at any time and you will still be where you started! I have had many patients with severe arthritis on knee x-rays who can bike many miles without pain. Keeping muscles strong by biking help muscles to absorb the loads our legs see during other daily activities and helps protect our joints. Incorporated into daily life research has shown that commuters who cycled to work had a 41% lower risk of dying from all causes than people who drove or took public transport.
